• BY EMILY HAHN

 “A forgotten American literary treasure.”

—THE NEW YORKER

• “One of this century's least recognized and most interesting journalists.”
KIRKUS REVIEWS

• “A shrewd, witty person…. A Bright Young Person.”
—NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW (1933)

• A Jazz-Age Novel about a Santa Fe Commune!

• Written at age 26!

 FEATURING:

•
Bohemian Artists!

 Impulsive Writers!

•
Parties!

• Drinking!

• Dancing!

• Independent Women!

• Wrong men!

ABOUT THIS TITLE:
• BEGINNERS LUCK was the author’s debut novel

•
“In August 1931, while she was still in Africa, her first novel was published. Entitled
BEGINNERS LUCKit tells the story of three young Americans who run away to Mexico after becoming disillusioned while living in an artist's commune in Santa Fe.”
—ENCYCLOPEDIA (WEBSITE)

“A novel about the Santa Fe of the artists and writers and HARVEY DETOURS-era, written at that time, by a woman who was a participant in that legendary period! HAHN went on to write many successful books about other parts of the world, and one of her memoirs also covers this short part of her long life, but don’t overlook this gem. More than other accounts of that period, mostly written sometime later, this one feels more authentic, especially about what it was like for a young, single, adventurous and impulsive woman who parties and drinks and goes for the wrong men.”
—MAIDA TILCHEN, AMAZON REVIEW

• “Her 48 books in 50 years…astonish not only by their numbers, but their vast literary range. She has written seven books of autobiography and five of reportage, as well as novels, histories, biographies, children's books, works of humor, a guidebook and a cookbook.”

 —NEW YORK TIMES (1978)

• ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

“One of America’s greatest journalists, early feminists, and international observers.”
—OPEN ROAD MEDIA (PUBLISHER)

“An early feminist and a prolific author who wrote 54 books and more than 200 articles for THE NEW YORKER…. MS. HAHN was known for her writings about her adventurous life in the Far East before World War II and for her books on such diverse subjects as Africa, D. H. LAWRENCE and apes…. At THE NEW YORKER, MS. HAHN became one of the few writers to work for all four of its editors, HAROLD ROSS, WILLIAM SHAWN, ROBERT GOTTLIEB and TINA BROWN.
—NEW YORK TIMES (AUTHOR’S OBITUARY, 1997)

“In 1930, after making some money from her first book, SEDUCTIO AD ABSURDUM: THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF SEDUCTION (1930), HAHN went to Africa, ‘young and impulsive, because I’d always wanted to’…. This remarkable woman wrote about 60 books on a wide range of subjects: biographies…and books about cookery, zoos, diamonds, natural history and travel as well as novels and books for children.”

—THE INDEPENDENT (UK)

• EMILY HAHN was brilliant, beautiful and shameless. Arriving in city in 1935, she rapidly scandalized Shanghai society by taking a Chinese lover, developing an addiction to opium and owning a pet gibbon named MR. MILLS….
—NED KELLY, THAT’S MAG (WEBSITE)

“She moved from here to there and everywhere, like some kind of beautiful, multi-colored and quixotic literary butterfly.”

—KEN CUTHBERTSON, HER BIOGRAPHER

• I have deliberately chosen the uncertain path whenever I had the choice.”

—EMILY HAHN

How We
GRADE
CONDITION

***********

DETAILS. The condition of every item we sell will be described in detail.

FLAWS. All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized.

Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw.

It is also possible that we may miss some perfections!

Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.

GRADING SYSTEM. For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability):

VERY FINE or LIKE NEW
FINE (or EXCELLENT)
NEAR FINE (or NF)
VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+)
VERY GOOD (or VG)
GOOD
FAIR
ACCEPTABLE
POOR

“POOR.” Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”

RETURNS. We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil!

(*Get it?)

POP QUIZ. Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math).

EXTRA VISUALS. Although we include multiple photographs in our listings, we usually have others we could share with you. (These extra photos also help to establish a paper-trial in the rare case that an item is damaged en route to you.)
