• For Your Consideration:

• A First Edition, Second Printing in Hardcover:

• “THE WIDOW’S TRIAL: A NOVEL”
(Harper & Row, 1989)

• BY JOHN EHLE, Author of “THE LAND BREAKERS,” ETC.

• “JOHN EHLE is our foremost writer of historical fiction.”
HARPER LEE

• ABOUT THIS TITLE:
• “Brutalized by her sadistic, drug-dealing husband, a charming woman on trial for his murder must battle the macho tradition that pervades her North Carolina mountain town.”
—FANTASTIC FICTIONS

•
“A story of love and justice in the North Carolina mountains that is as fresh as dew.”
—KIRKUS REVIEWS

“In some mountain coves of North Carolina, ‘for better or for worse’ still means just that. Winnette knew Ernest Lloyd Plover to be a hard-drinking, drug-pushing, gun-carrying, abusive man before she married him, didn't she? Then she shot him dead in self-defense--or premeditated murder. Her trial proceeds through the testimony of witnesses and the pronouncements of the crotchety judge, the rookie DA, and the retired lawyer court-appointed to defend her. No Perry Mason antics here; just plain mountain people trying to arrive at justice. Characterizations are strong, the descriptions of wife abuse even more so.”

—LIBRARY JOURNAL

“Developed through alternating viewpoints, and accurately reflecting Southern voices and sensibilities, EHLE…has a deft touch, a sure grasp of character and, here, a diverting story.
—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

• “JOHN EHLE has quickly become one of my favorite writers. To call him a sectional writer is like calling THOMAS HARDY a mere Somersetshire chronicle. Sly, lyrical, original, always moving, and a genius for scripting the moments that require greatness from his well-drawn characters. His work is hard to forget, so faithful to reality, and beautiful. We need a MENDELSOHN to discover and popularize him this J.S. BACH of the Appalachian Mountains.”

—RT COLARESI

• “I've read this book twice and am about to read it again because I think it is so good. I am always surprised when I find a male writer who shows extraordinary sensitivity to a woman's situation. This book is a shining example of that kind of sensitivity in addition to being a good story well told, well written.”
—MICKEY HENKEL, AMAZON REVIEW

• “As in his other works THE JOURNEY OF AUGUST KING and THE WIDOW’S TRIALEHLE concentrates much of his own attention on the conversations and considerations of the characters, but he does it as much with their speech and actions as with their thoughts, so his stories never stall, even in the prolonged trials or family councils he recounts.”

—R.T. SMITH, EDITOR, SHENANDOAH

How We
GRADE
CONDITION

***********

DETAILS. The condition of every item we sell will be described in detail.

FLAWS. All discernible flaws will be noted, if not emphasized.

Of course, the grading of condition can be subjective. And since no grader is perfect, it is possible that we may at times miss a flaw.

It is also possible that we may miss some perfections!

Should we make a mistake, you will find FLAPPINCAT eager to fix things with you. Just send us a note and we’ll get on it.

GRADING SYSTEM. For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability):

VERY FINE or LIKE NEW
FINE (or EXCELLENT)
NEAR FINE (or NF)
VERY GOOD PLUS (or VG+)
VERY GOOD (or VG)
GOOD
FAIR
ACCEPTABLE
POOR

“POOR.” Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”

RETURNS. We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil!

(*Get it?)

POP QUIZ. Please feel free to ask questions at any time about condition (or anything else, except math).

EXTRA VISUALS. Although we include multiple photographs in our listings, we usually have others we could share with you. (These extra photos also help to establish a paper-trail in the rare case that an item is damaged en route to you.)
