Does Taylor Swift Merch Increase in Value Over Time?

👩‍💻

I saw that the heart-shaped Lover albums sold out instantly and got the impression that certain albums and maybe other merchandise gain in value. Do people have experience with this?

I never thought of collecting merchandise. I just buy albums and CDs for my personal listening pleasure. I do know that people have amazing collections and displays, but is there evidence that Taylor's merchandise get more valuable with time?

🧑‍💻

Taylor merch definitely increases in value but it’s difficult to gauge which items will be sought after. Standard press vinyl for example will be wildly available but limited presses will always increase in value. But that’s not to say they will always be limited. For example - the Lover hearts sold out quickly and resale on these will likely increase within the next couple of weeks, but whose to say Taylor doesn’t repress it and release stock for it later?

Some recent items that have significantly increased in value that Taylor has put out in recent years:

I don’t often see apparel reselling for crazy amounts but some can like reputation merch and the cardigans.

I’d recommend you buy thing because you want them not because they may increase in value. That part of it is just a perk.

👨‍💻

Certain rare vinyl pressings do, yes, and also a handful of merch stuff, like the cardigans. i wouldn’t specifically buy stuff banking on it increasing in value though. like if you want to have a collection of some merch stuff because you like the actual stuff you should! but collecting on the off chance it’ll be worth something monetarily one day is probably a waste of your money

👩‍🎤

Some merch goes up in value but I think that overall collecting merch is a expensive upfront investment that may or may not make money .

I think Taylor’s team would also love for you to buy merch thinking it would be more valuable later. The FOMO marketing and countdowns show they are trying to play into this .

I would suggest only buying things if you are happy being stuck with it / the item is something you would enjoy . Example is the midnights “special editions” which people now have to sell for below market value. Another example is the Christmas tree farm picture disk which went up in price when people thought it wouldn’t be repressed ( it was selling for 80 dollars ) but now that it has been sold again this year it’s down to 35-40 dollars.

🧑‍💻

The heart shaped lover vinyl is anyone’s game right now; the graphics are still on the front page of all of her websites — those normally disappear when someone is gone, like actually gone. I also noticed that it was listed as special edition rather than limited edition. Signs are pointing to them being restocked or brought back again in the future.

I’d say the majority of her merch doesn’t climb in value, but there are certain items that will based on scarcity.

👨‍💻

Oh wait it said special?!?! That’s what the Midnights variants said too! I thought it said limited???

I don’t know how I missed special in huge letters. I really thought it said limited. With it still being on the site, and saying special, I’m pretty sure they were somehow surprised by the demand (how, I don’t know, but I think they were somehow even though it makes no sense) and they’re getting more pressed before putting them back in stock

🧑‍💻

Yes! Hopefully I didn’t miss it anywhere, but I combed through multiple sites and articles searching for the word limited and never found it. I think they’ll be making more rounds in the near future :)

👨‍💻

I’m really happy to hear that. And happy I didn’t spend $150 or so on eBay.

I’m gonna kind of feel sorry for the people who did if it gets restocked and it’s way less rare than people thought, but I also think maaaaaybeeee we need to all start learning to wait and not feed the eBay scalpers. Feeding them is half the reason stuff sells out that fast to begin with.

👩‍💻

Most clothing items will not raise in value, however anything that’s considered different probably will. What that means is any special edition vinyl's in colors other than black (as long as they’re not the editions that go to all other retailers too, like midnights, and aren’t the target red pressings), any merch that’s not very common to see for artists/are clearly more intentional than a graphic on a shirt (so the snow globes, lover dice, high quality books like the rep book, etc), blankets, lighters (surprised Taylor didn’t do this but Kacey Musgraves did, one of my favorite merch pieces ever), things of that nature. Any and all clothing, outside of the rare different item (rep tour jacket, embroidered snake hoodie, cardigans, etc.) won’t raise in value at all 9 times out of 10.

🧑‍💻

Certain items do! Like the Taylor Swift/Peter Max dual signed album cover lithos do! Anything like that for sure. If those records are limited, they definitely will.

👨‍💻

It does and the longer you have it the less you want to sell it 😆
