What is Biofiltration?

Biofiltration is the natural action of bacteria to break down dangerous ammonia, converting it into nitrite, which in turn converts nitrite into less toxic nitrate.

What is a biological medium?

A biological medium is any inert material that contains colonies of beneficial bacteria that break down ammonia. Biological media is usually placed in your filtration system, and water is forced through, bringing in the nutrients and oxygen that bacteria need to complete their nitrogen cycle.

Does the biofilter media need to be replaced?

Won't. Removal or replacement of media can severely deplete beneficial flora. A discoloration or film found on the media indicates healthy bacterial growth. However, if the medium is clogged, you can use pond water to gently remove some material to improve flow.

What conditions do beneficial bacteria need to grow properly?

Beneficial bacteria thrive in conditions with ammonia or nitrite as a food source, temperatures above 55°F, and plenty of oxygen. Fish waste and decaying food and plants provide ammonia, while the water moving over them provides oxygen. Once the beneficial bacteria are established in your biological medium, they are very difficult to destroy unless over-cleaning, using chlorinated water, or using certain drugs such as antibiotics.

What maintenance is required for biofilter media?

Check your filter regularly to ensure particles are not clogging the biofilter media and reducing efficiency. The biological medium should not be replaced unless it becomes too clogged to function. It can be simply flushed with pond water to unclog and improve the function of the biofilter. In most cases, it is recommended that filtration systems include mechanical media to filter particles out of the water before they reach the biological media. This will slow buildup and help prevent clogging.
