“The rhinoceros (meaning “nose horn”) is a large, thick skinned, gray-colored rhino with one or two nose horns. Poachers sell rhino horns to use in folk medicine. Rhinos are in danger of extinction because of hunting and the loss of habitat. The nose horn(s) are made from a hairlike substance that grows throughout the rhino’s life. Of the horn is broken off, it will grow back. They can grow from 1-3 inches (2.5-8cm) each year. The longest known rhino horn was over 5 feet (1.5m) long. Rhinoceros are from 3.5-6.5 feet (1-2m) tall at the shoulder and weigh from 3,169 to 7,920 pounds (1,440-3,600kg). Rhinos are herbivores (plant eaters).”
