Uniformenkunde is, considered by many, as one of the best works on Uniformology.

Richard Knotel (1857-1914) was a German artist and pioneer of the study of military uniforms. He is considered one of the most important German historical painters. His greatest work, "Uniformenkunde" is a huge collection of plates concerning the armies of Europe from the 17th century to the beginning of WW 1. Uniformenkunde is still perhaps the most widely referenced & respected pieces of work for the study of military attire of the early modern era. The work, first came out in 1890. Knotel published roughly 50 or more prints every year until shortly after the start of WW 1. Each print was done as a work of line art, then hand colored by journeymen artists who had a master print to work by.
