If we see that our dog feels anxious or very stressed, either because there is movement or because a new person arrives in the house, we can give him a few teaspoons of this infusion to drink. This plant produces a slightly sedative effect on dogs, so it is ideal to calm them down and even give it to them so that they are calm if we can expect them to be in a situation that will cause them discomfort. The main ingredient in chamomile that produces this relaxing effect for dogs is apigenin.

Soothe the skin with chamomile

This plant, native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, is highly indicated to relieve skin irritation or certain reactions that may occur when it comes into contact with certain substances. In addition, it is also a very good option to soothe the itching and pain caused by insect bites.

If this is the case for your pet, you can apply chamomile to your dog's affected skin with a cotton cloth dipped in the cold infusion. You should pass the cloth gently to avoid further damage to your dog's dermis, give a gentle massage in circles and allow the skin to soak well in this tea and let it dry on its own. In case of bites, you can also add some mint to the infusion or use aloe vera.

How do we give chamomile to dogs?

We have seen that chamomile can be given to dogs, either to drink or to apply to the skin or eyes. If you want to use chamomile for dogs with diarrhea or vomiting, we should make the tea first. Therefore, to prepare chamomile tea for dogs, we must boil water, approximately the amount corresponding to a cup, that is, about 250 ml. We will put a bag of chamomile in it, and let it steep for a few minutes. Then we filter it and once it cools or heats up, we can use the chamomile water for our dog. No need to add sugar or other sweeteners.

To give chamomile to a dog, we can simply give it to him in his drinking bowl. The dog may reject it. In this case, we will use a needleless syringe with a capacity of about 5-10 ml, always placing it on the side of the mouth behind the canines, and we will infuse slowly and carefully so as not to suffocate them. If the dog resists, however, we should not force him.

In case of topical use, we prepare the infusion as we explained and apply it through gauze or cotton, which we will soak in the liquid. If we clean both eyes, we must use gauze for each one and we will always pass it from the inside to the outside.

As mentioned before, the dosage of chamomile for dogs will depend on each specific condition and what it is intended to treat. It is therefore necessary to consult a veterinarian, because offering the animal something inappropriate can be counterproductive and make its condition worse.

How to use chamomile to get rid of dog worms?

We have already seen that chamomile can help remove ticks more easily or relieve irritation caused by flea bites. To use it, we simply have to prepare the infusion with it, as we explained in the previous section, moisten sterile gauze or cotton in it (once it is warm) and pass it across the affected area, very gently and carefully, especially if we intend to remove the tick.

On the other hand, we have the option of performing a chamomile bath, massaging the animal's body and spreading the solution all over its body and making sure that it does not penetrate the ears or eyes. Then rinse and dry it well. This is a puppy-friendly treat.

Chamomile acts as a repellent and makes fleas and ticks want to flee, however, this does not always work and, therefore, we highlight the importance of using a prescription anti-parasitic product. As a supplement to this product, chamomile can be used to soothe a dog's skin, reduce inflammation, and promote the healing of bite wounds.
