A stunning example of a classic ammonite from the Jurassic Coast - a calcite ammonite fossil of the species Asteroceras obtusum from the world-famous Jurassic beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.

The piece of limestone matrix measures 185 mm (7.3 inches) tall and the fossil ammonite measures 82 mm (3.2 inches) across, which is a good size for this species. The ammonite is well preserved and has been prepared out of the rock so it partly sits free of the matrix with the keel fully exposed. The ribs are very finely defined, and the colour is beautiful: a mix of yellows, browns and greys. It is preserved in crystalline calcite. There is also a piece of fossilised driftwood preserved behind the ammonite, adding to the interest in this fossil. Many hours of preparation have gone into this beautiful and unique fossil.

A great example of the species and impressive in the flesh. Some minor cracks in the shell have been professionally repaired. The fossil weighs 2580 grams and has a cut flat base to allow it to stand freely on its own for display. These are very sought after ammonites from this world-famous location.

Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
