This is a rare opportunity to get some wonderful old growth redwood guitar tops. These tops are not the normal redwood you see on eBay from people who don’t know how to build instruments.

In the winter of 2016 a very large 1000 year old growth redwood tree fell and blocked a trail in the Santa Cruz mountains. The a large section of the tree was cut out to make way for the trail. I personally when in and hand split several billets from the rounds of redwood and hiked them out wet. I aired dried the billets in my attic for 8 years and moved them into my humidity controlled wood room where I started processing the wood into tops.

Each top has never been cut by a saw to ensure that all the grain is perfectly straight. I am selling tops either rough split so you can manage finally thicknessing yourself or sanded flat for an additional $20. You can see from the pictures the very high grain count, vertical grain and figured rays. All of which are only achieved when you know how to process wood from source to instrument.

The age of the wood and the processing creates a wonderful tap tone. I have already built a couple of guitars from this wood and it produces loud bass notes and clear rich overtones. Paired with the right back/sides and proper tuning, these tops can produce a world class instrument. See pictures of the wood in detail and the documentation of its journey.
