This coaster from a public brewery in Ludwigshafen am Rhein dates from the Second World War. Roughly translated, it advertises a nonalcoholic beer from the Hella brewery: "Do you know about Hella's nonalcoholic beer?" Some markings on the coaster appear in pencil—four X's and two straight lines. Roman numerals for "42" perhaps? Signifying the year either my father or my uncle sat in the pub and quaffed a beer? Both of them served with the U.S. Army during WWII. No idea, really. But it's a pretty cool artifact. Who knew they even made nonalcoholic beer back then?
