H.J. Wood, formed in 1885, was well known for producing quality English ceramics, in the 1930s the business is thought to have been incorporated into the Woods and Sons company, but continued to produce under H J Wood for several decades longer. Woods and Sons was originally formed in 1865 by Henry's brother Thomas Francis Wood and father Absalom, it is believed that the family name had been involved with the potteries from the 18th century which had seen the foundation of the Woods dynasty laid and was to survive for over 200 years. Much history can be found regarding the ups and downs of this company's circle of life. This multicoloured design features the King of Hearts in a Toby Jug style, with a height of approximately 7 inches produced as a part of the 'Pack of Cards' series by H.J. Wood and is a wonderful part of that history, making a great starter piece into the wonderful world of Pottery and Toby Jugs, or indeed for those that appreciate the experience of potteries gone by, the history behind them and the work that was produced.
