This is a FIRST EDITION, SECOND PRINTING of The Subterraneans by Jack Kerouac, in hardcover with the exceptionally scarce original dust jacket. NY: Grove Press, 1958. 111 pp.

The book is in very good condition but for some slight darkening/faint damp staining especially to the top edge of the boards and the spine, light bumping to the spine ends, some light shelfwear including to the corner tips, and slight toning. Please see photographs. The pages are clean, unmarked, and lightly and evenly toned. The book is tightly and squarely bound. The last few pages bear a shallow imprint as though a ruler (or something shaped like it) was kept in the book at one time—without any damage to the binding or any tearing of the pages. The book has the very faintest hint of a tobacco aroma, noticeable only slightly if you fan the pages before your nose. See photos as to condition.

The rare dust jacket is in good or good- condition but for a large piece of the top of the jacket missing from the rear cover, small fragments missing from the spine, various tears, wrinkles, scuffs, and chips, faint dampstaining along the edges of both the front and rear jacket covers and spine edge. The unclipped jacket has blank front and rear flaps, as issued. (It is possible that there may have been a stamped price on the front flap at one time, but if that was the case, the dampstaining to the top edge of the front flap has bled it away.) Please see photographs. The dust jacket is now protected in a removable mylar jacket protector. Notwithstanding its flaws, the scarce jacket looks sharp on the book.
