Herbs came together in 1979, in a time of societal upheaval, Maori awakening and land rights struggles, a global shift in indigenous consciousness, and all against the background of NZ Prime Minister Muldoon’s vice-like hold on power and later a Springbok rugby tour which divided the nation. In recent years contemporary groups like Fat Freddys Drop, Katchafire and House of Shem (led by former Herbs member Carl Perkins) have cited Herbs as inspirational pioneers.

Herbs produced a stream of reggae hits with some of the country's top talent. In the 1980s and the first half of the '90s, Herbs had 10 top 20 singles hits.
