• Spine – good condition – leather spine faded to brown from purple, gilt titles an decoration.
• Joints – good condition – gently worn.
• Corners – good condition – bumped and worn.
• Boards – good condition – original cloth boards with maroon titles to the front contained in a brown decorative border, there is the small Cape ‘urn’ design in the centre of the rear board, both boards are marked.
• Page edges – good condition – top edge slightly darkened, all tanned.

Internally

• Hinges – good condition – sound.
• Paste downs – good condition – illustrated in colour by Lofting.
• End papers – good condition – illustrated in colour by Lofting continued from the paste downs.
• Title – good condition – b/w illustration by Hugh Lofting, lightly tanned with minor foxing.
• Pages – good condition – full colour frontispiece, numerous illustrations throughout the text, some colour, some b/w, pages are lightly tanned.
• Binding – good condition.
