Description:

London: Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen, April 16^th 1855-1856, First Quarto Edition, Second Edition Overall.

1855 First Quarto Edition of David Roberts THE HOLY LAND, printed in London by Day & Son in 1855 and 1856.

Bound in the publisher’s original dark green half morocco, gilt decorated spine with green cloth boards, with the gilt crest of the Kingdom of Jerusalem to the front boards.

Six volumes bound in three, with 250 Lithograph Plates, printed in colour. The volumes are complete in all respects with 241 colour-tinted lithographic plates, 6 tinted lithographic titles and vignettes, 2 lithographic maps, and 1 portrait of Roberts.

All page edges gilt.

The bindings show some wear, marks and scratches, Vol I-II has had a spine repair with the original spine laid on. Internally the leaves are tanned with some foxing, more extreme to the beginning and end and the margins of the prints. The lithographic prints all retain their original protective tissue covers.

Some pages standing proud to Vol II-IV and V-VI.

Provenance: signature of B Dowson to all volumes.

• Spine – good condition – repaired to Vol I-II with the original spine laid on, gilt titles, compartments decorated in gilt, some marks and wear.
• Joints – good condition – rubbed and worn, repaired to Vol I-II.
• Corners – good condition – bumped and worn.
• Boards – good condition – half leather binding, cloth buckram boards with wear and marks.
• Page edges – good condition – all edges gilt.

Internally

• Hinges – good condition – secure and strong, repaired and strengthened.
• Paste downs – good condition – plain, tanned.
• End papers – good condition – plain, signature for B Dowson to all volumes, subsequent end papers foxed.
• Title – good condition – gently tanned with minor foxing.
• Pages – good condition – tanned with sporadic foxing throughout.
• Binding – good condition – attractive, worn.
