Description: RPPC Baseball Team With African American In Jersey Old Photo Postcard. Undated and unposted card. Area is not identified, but letters on several of the team members read EC. A sign in back of the team reads, all in caps, "Visiting Players Bench Only." Of particular interest is an African American wearing a jersey. He is seated in the front, by the bats, and is holding a ball. Perhaps he was the team's ball boy? He does look younger than the other members in the team photo. However, he is wearing a distinctive team jersey. Unlike the other members pictured, his jersey is from the (illegible) Giants. I cannot make out the complete lettering that appears above "Giants," but the letters CHO can clearly be seen.
The jersey the African American in the picture is wearing, while the lettering is not fully visible on it, appears to be that of the Anchor Giants, a negro baseball team that in the June 27, 1917 issue of the Evening Ledger of Philadelphia (page 6) was described as, "claimants of the negro championship of Philadelphia."
Truly a cool find that is worthy of further historical research.
Please note that I have listed the date range on this card as being potentially between 1904-1918. While the card itself is undated, I am basing the age range on the AZO with four triangles pointing upward mark. This can be seen in the top righthand corner of the reverse of the postcard. While the location of the card is not identified, it was acquired in Bucks County, PA. That being said, I don't know the exact state where the image on the card was taken.
This postcard does have wear consistent with age. There are a few observable creases in the RPPC that can be seen in more detail when the photo postcard is examined closely in the light. I have provided a number of pictures to illustrate this and the overall condition of the postcard. Please note that the first two photos show the color of the image better than the one with the creases. However, I had to tilt the image in a certain way so that the creases would be visible. Unfortunately, this gave the uploaded image of the card an overtly yellowish hue. If you have an questions about this please email me.

While all the lettering on the jersey the African American in this RPPC is wearing is not visible, it is my opinion (attribution) that the jersey is from the Anchor Giants (Hence the title of this auction).
