Rare vintage postcard Nikolaevsky bridge Kiev.
Nikolaevsky Bridge, aka Chain Bridge in Kiev, Ukraine.

 Basic information:
Mykolayivskyi / Chain Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks of Kyiv in the past and the century before last. In 1853-1920, it was a real architectural marvel of the time.
The chain bridge served as a crossing over the Dnipro River at the site of the current Metro Bridge. Nowadays, the image of the bridge has been preserved only on old postcards and photographs.

The chain bridge in Kyiv was built by an Irish scientist, British Charles Vignol. The project was approved by Emperor Nicholas I, and the bridge was named after him.
The Chain Bridge was built in the English Gothic style. It is the only six-span bridge in the world across a body of water. It was 776 meters long and 16 meters wide. One ring of the bridge weighed as much as 192 kg. The bridge was supported by "bulls" lined with granite tiles. The roadway was made of wood. Lattice beams were attached to chains on iron rods. The iron parts of the bridge were made in Birmingham. Then, on 16 ships, they were delivered to Odesa via Liverpool. From there they were brought to Kyiv on oxen.
Barracks were built on the banks of the Dnipro River to house the workers. Charles Vignol himself and his two sons came to Kyiv to supervise the process. The entire project cost about 3.5 million rubles.

In 1854, an exact silver copy of the bridge was exhibited at the World's Fair in London, in the Crystal Palace of the architect Paxton. On September 28, 1853, the bridge was consecrated. On this day, the monument to Prince Vladimir was also consecrated. On August 30, 1848, the first stone was laid in the construction of the bridge in Kyiv, just opposite Askold's grave. A year later, the Chain Bridge was officially put into operation. But it was only in 1855 that full traffic was allowed on it. A one-horse carriage was allowed to pass for 20 kopecks, and a two-horse carriage for 40 kopecks. In 1889, the bridge was made a drawbridge. At midnight, a separate part of it parted to allow ships with a mast to pass under it. During the closure of the bridge, people crossed the Dnipro on a two-ferry ferry. And in 1912, a tram started running across the bridge.

In 1920, the Chain Bridge in Kyiv was blown up by Polish troops. A year later, in 1921, the remains of the bridge were also blown up to make it out of the way. Later, in its place, Yevhen Paton built another crossing, the Eugenia Bosch Bridge. It was placed on the preserved pillars of the Chain Bridge. It was slightly altered to increase the height of the bridge. However, this bridge was also destroyed during the war. Today, when the water in the Dnipro River drops significantly, you can still see the remains of the Chain Bridge pylons from the Metro Bridge.
