HE WAS A MILITARY OFFICER AND UNION ARMY GENERAL DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR AND WAS WOUNDED THREE TIMES AT THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM. AFTER HE RECOVERED HIS VI CORPS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE CHANCELLORSVILLE CAMPAIGN BY ENGAGING CONFEDERATE TROOPS AT THE SECOND BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG AND THE BATTLE OF SALEM CHURCH. FIVE MONTHS AFTER THE DATE OF THIS LETTER HE WAS KILLED BY A SHARPSHOOTER AT THE BATTLE OF SPOTSYLVANIA COURT HOUSE, MAKING HIM AND THREE OTHERS THE HIGHEST RANKING UNION OFFICERS KILLED IN THE WAR. HERE IN THIS LONG HANDWRITTEN LETTER HE MENTIONS ADDRESSING A NOTE TO GENERAL PATRICK, PROVOST MARSHAL GENERAL, REGARDING THE ARREST OF THE LETTER WRITER’S FATHER.

MAJOR GENERAL JOHN SEDGWICK (1813-1864) CIVIL WAR-DATED HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “I am very respectfully Your obdt Servt, John Sedgwick”, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Headquaters Sixth Army Corps letterhead, December 10, 1863, addressed from Brandy Station, to Miss Bernice Shackelford. In part: “…I have the honor to acknowledge your note of the 4th instant. Immediately upon its receipt, last evening, I addressed a note to Gen. Patrick, Provost Marshal General, inquiring the cause of your father’s arrest, and the means to be taken to procure his release….General Barry in Washington, who was an intimate and warm friend of your uncle and who will, I am sure, use all his endeavors to effect the release of your father. With your uncle, our friendship [was] formed at West Point, was broken only by his death. He died in my arms no sixteen years since. I have a full sized painting of him which I value more than anything I possess…You may be assured that I will do my best for your father’s release at as early a day a practicable….” This rare handwritten letter comes with an original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait in his military uniform and the original “Headquarters Sixth Army Corps” mailing envelope.
