Born a slave in Arkansas, River Bass is a member of the United States Marshal Service and ensures law and order in Arizona as sheriff in 1875. Now he is faced with his most difficult task yet: A group of runaway slaves have come together under the leadership of the mysterious Milord and are spreading terror and violence across the state, and Bass is supposed to infiltrate and stop them. But when the leader of the outlaws recognizes him and his cover is blown, everything changes.
 
The historical Bass Reeves (1838-1910) was a freed slave, a soldier, a vagabond, and the first black sheriff in United States history. In the harsh reality of the Wild West, he fought with idealism for equality and respect, but ultimately his story remains that of a lonely hero.
