TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) has been around since 1960, developed by DuPont and BF Goodrich (today, Lubrizol). TPU has superior properties, extremely high wear resistance and resilience, durability, low temperature flexibility, superior tear strength, high elasticity. The tube brand Eclipse has been founded in 2011 in Switzerland as the first commercial inner tube using TPU as material.

Eclipse has developed proprietary technologies for joining the tube ends, as well as the mechanical assembly of a valve stem to the tube material. Both details are patented and have been defeated in lawsuits against BASF and Schwalbe and can therefore not be used by any competitor.
