While you can use this unit without cable, if you do use cable this unit can be used instead of the cable company's set-top box (which are expensive to rent or buy). Then you can use TiVo Minis to stream video from this unit (including Cable TV) to other TVs without paying a fee for additional cable boxes (saved me a ton of $$$!).
