Two different metaphors can be used to approach the topic of fourth dimensional space. The most popular is the slicing (or Flatland) model, which can be compared to the appearance of a three-dimensional object as it appears as it slices through a two-dimensional space, such as the surface of a pond. In contrast, the shadow model is comparable to the projection of the shadow of a three-dimensional object onto a flat surface. It is this second model that has been unfairly neglected in prior discussions of the development of math and art, argues the author, a professional artist who is a "pioneer in the computer visualization of four-dimensional geometry." His revisionist history traces the influence of the shadow model on such diverse areas of human endeavor as Picasso's invention of cubism and Minkowski's development of special relativity.
