Haute-Garonne is a department located in the South of France, in the Occitanie region. Its prefecture is the city of Toulouse, which is also the capital of the Occitanie region. A first department of Haute-Garonne existed from 1790 to 1808, and also included the former district of Castelsarrasin, before the creation of the department of Tarn-et-Garonne. The department was created during the French Revolution, on March 4 Mars 1790 pursuant to the law of December 22, 1789, from part of the province of Languedoc. It was larger than now because it included the district of Castelsarrasin which was transferred to the department of Tarn-et-Garonne, when it was created in 1808. It was the courses of the Tarn and the Tescou which drew the limit. The Gascony part is limited to the sub-prefectural dependency of Saint-Gaudens. The Languedoc part includes the sub-prefectural dependencies of Muret and those of the Toulouse prefecture. Main cities: Toulouse, Tournefeuille, Blagnac, Colomiers, Muret, Plaisance-du-Touch, Cugnaux, Balma, Saint-Jean, Auterive...
