The breathtaking blue corn is said to have originated from the Hopi people of the Southwest. Its colors range from slate blue to brilliant turquoise, with some surprise purples, making it a true marvel of nature. The kernels of this variety serve as both flour and dent types and are often found on the same ear. Locally uséd in atole and ground for cornmeal, these lovely ears typically run 6 to 12 inches long and are produced one per 4- to 5-foot stalk. This versatile corn has proven to be quite hardy, growing well even at 8,000 feet elevation, and exhibiting tolerance to wide temperature swings and cool soil. With a fairly early maturity date, this corn is ready for harvest at about 90 days from sowing. Our grower was fortunate enough to receive his original seed in 1986 from John “Eesawu” Kimmey, an educator and visionary of sustainable Native agriculture who worked extensively with the Hopi people and founded the Talavaya Center, an early heirloom conservation project.
