JUNGHANS 'Ato Mat' battery mantel clock, early 1970s

This is a simple yet stylish mantel clock from Junghans dating to the early 1970s. The clock has a mahogany veneered plywood case, which leans back slightly on its base, an aluminium fascia with a brushed champagne finish, gold coloured bezel and domed glass. The back looks to be Formica - a staple of the era!

The clock is driven by an electronic battery movement, the in-house W726, introduced in 1970. Based on the ATO principle, this has a balance wheel like a conventional clock, but it is impulsed by the transistor-switched interaction between a coil and magnets rather than by mechanical force as with a spring-driven movement.

The clock has been disassembled and cleaned. There are a few fine scratches to the aluminium fascia but it is otherwise in very good overall condition and full working order, keeping good time with a quiet tick. It takes a C type battery but an AA can also be used.

Please note that the movement has an 'on-off' switch to start the balance turning. Note also that all electronic movements can be regulated and with patience something approaching quartz accuracy can be achieved. Please also note that as this is a vintage clock I can offer no guarantees. If you have any questions please ask!
