Description:
The sacred cow of all long-shounen and one of the most popular manga of all time. It was sold (and is still being sold) in huge numbers and is included in most of the top manga to this day. Inspired by the authors of One Piece and Naruto.
Plot:
Akira Toriyama's story is based on one of the four classic Chinese novels popular in Japan, Journey to the West. The main character of the work, a boy with a monkey tail named Son Goku (in Journey to the West - Sun Wukong), learns martial arts and explores the world in search of seven mystical objects, which are known as “dragon pearls”. According to legend, they fulfill any wish if you put them together. He first met a teenage girl from the city, Bulma, who was looking for dragon balls to find a boyfriend. They were joined on the journey by the pig-man Ulong, who can transform into any thing, and the desert bandit Yamcha, who suffers from gynophobia. Also on the way, Goku met his future teacher Muten Roshi, a martial artist who likes to read porn magazines, Demon Gyumao and his daughter Chi-Chi, whom Goku foolishly wanted to marry, thinking that a wedding was a meal. In the first volume of the manga, the villain was the stupid Emperor Pilaf, who wanted to rule the world.
About publications:
Dragon Ball was originally published in book format in 42 tankōbon, which became the basis for the American edition. Later, the Japanese launched a deluxe version of Kanzenban in 34 volumes with color pages and other goodies, including a slightly edited ending. "The Greatest Long Shonen" had no luck with American scans for a very long time. Even after scanning the original volumes of Dragon Ball, I didn’t see anything at all (and I saw a lot of different crap). But fortunately, in 2015, the complete digital version of the manga from Viz Media was finally released.
Regarding its numbering, it is worth clarifying. Initially, in the manga, unlike the anime, there was no division into Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z: just 42 volumes in order. But in this version, Viz decided to follow the trend and charge new numbering from the time skip. In general, there is no difference: first there are 16 volumes of Dragon Ball, and then 26 volumes of Dragon Ball Z.
In general, everything is fine with the current edition, but: unlike Kanzenban, the digital edition has no color pages, and the ending corresponds to the original (sort of, because I haven’t seen the changed ending).
