According to Wikipedia, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union WCTU was organized December 23, 1873 in Hillsboro Ohio for the purpose of creating a sober and pure world through abstinence from alcohol, purity and evangelical Christianity.  Its first President was Annie Wittenmyer. The organization expanded its efforts, including political participation (remember women could not vote at this time) under its second President Frances Willard who served from 1879 until her death in 1898.  The WCTU remains active to this day, albeit much smaller in membership from its early 1900 to 1960 level.
