Master director Patricio Guzmán travels 10,000 feet above sea level to the driest desert on earth for this remarkable documentary. Here, the sky is so translucent that it allows astronomers to see the boundaries of our universe. Yet the Atacama Desert climate also keeps human remains intact: pre-Columbian mummies; explorers and miners; and the remains of disappeared political prisoners. Women sift the desert soil for the bones of their loved ones, while archaeologists uncover traces of ancient civilizations and astronomers examine the most distant and oldest galaxies.

Patricio Guzman writes, directs and narrates this Spanish documentary. The film-maker again explores Chile's violent past but this time also examines the country's waterways and its 2,600 mile-long coastline. The film tells the story of the country's most ancient inhabitants, The Water People, and features interviews with their descendants who discuss the reasons behind their demise. Meanwhile, Guzman narrates the tale of another native who was taken from his home in Tierra del Fuego to England in 1830 in order to be made civilised. He also later narrates the tale of the country's 'disappeared' who dared to oppose President Salvador Allende.
