Born on May 8, 1828 in Bekaa Kafra in northern Lebanon, Youssef Antoun Makhlouf received a very pious education, which gave him the love of prayer. He follows his two hermit uncles to the monastery of Saint Anthony of Kozhaya where he devotes himself to a monastic and reclusive life.
On December 16, 1898, Brother Charbel was paralyzed while celebrating mass. He died for eight days and died on December 24. Just before his burial in the cemetery of the monastery, we witness the healing of a young paralytic who had touched his remains. A few months later, resplendent rays of light appeared around his grave. More and more people experienced healing and received help through Charbel's intercession.
When the tomb where Charbel was buried, was opened, with the permission of the patriarch, his body was then found in exactly the same condition as on the day of his death.
The body exuded a liquid like blood, but oily. On July 24, 1927, he was placed in a wooden coffin and buried in a niche in the monastery chapel. However, the mysterious liquid continued to ooze from the coffin. The answers to prayers and healings suddenly multiplied. Thousands of testimonies, listed in the archives of the Annaya monastery, prove the holiness and miraculous power of this hermit who was so silent throughout his life.
After all the ecclesiastical expertise, Charbel Makhlouf was beatified by Pope Paul VI in 1965. On October 9, 1977, this same Pope canonized the miraculous monk of Lebanon. He will therefore be a powerful help for all those who ask for his intercession.
