Jack
Stanley [b 1905] 1919-1933 at Royal Worcester- one of the "Terrible
Seven" (seven "rather boisterous" apprentices) Jack Stanley was
born in 1905 and left school at 14 (the norm in those days). He joined the
Royal Worcester Porcelain works as an apprentice in 1919 just after WW1,
working under Ernest Phillips for flowers and William Hawkins for figure
subjects and still life, as part of this training he attended the Victoria
Institute and was taught to draw.The group of apprentices, at the time, were well
known in the company as the "Terrible seven" consisting of Jack, Harry Ayrton, Bill Bagnall, Bill Bee, George Moseley, Ted
Townsend and Charlie Twilton.During his apprenticeship he was awarded the prize
for the best painting of an item from the city museum, bearded tits.He became a
china painter, a lot of his work went to the USA & still makes £100s when
it comes up for sale. He lost his job through the economic great depression in
1933 which was a personal blow at age 28 & a significant loss to the china
trade and he joined the Worcester New Gas Light and Coke Co.
