2 x Crepe Paper and Card Souvenir Passenger Promenade Caps from the luxurious but ill fated SS Normandie, the fastest Ship to cross the Atlantic in 1935, winning the 'Blue Riband' for her Le Havre to New York crossing at 28.98 knots. These souvenir paper caps were probably distributed to passengers during the passages as headwear when promenading the decks or as keepsakes during the liners maiden voyage.

The magnificent ship was not only the fastest, but also the most streamlined and opulent of its day, 'The Pride of France'. Sadly at the outbreak of war after only four and a half years service, she was docked in New York and became destined to become a troop ship. during re-fitting at pier 88 she caught fire and capsized and was scrapped in 1946.

Condition of the two caps is extremely fragile, both require conservation. The silver paper 'Anchor motif is missing from one, and the peak missing from the other. some of the paper is torn but is mostly present. The glue has dried over the years and the caps will require sensitive re-assembly. Once restored they will make a very rare addition to any collection.

I purchased them in France 40 years ago, and they have remained boxed and stored until photographed a few days ago.

The Items will be wrapped in soft tissue and hard boxed for shipping.
