This is a beautiful 1924 Mappin and Webb Ltd, sterling silver, fully hallmarked, pedestal bowl/tazza. The ornate engraving workmanship of the four scroll shells and intricate scalloped border is absolutely exquisite.

It's a truly stunning piece of Mappin & Webb workmanship, fully hallmarked .... 'John Newton Mappin & George Webb', Birmingham, with the date letter Z for 1924 in a shield cartouche.

Considering this pedestal bowl is 90 years old it's in fantastic original condition, with no splits, dents, chips or damage, just some very beautiful patina wear to the silver, commensurate with its age.

Mappin & Webb ....

John Newton Mappin started an electroplating and cutlery firm which by 1868 was called Mappin & Webb. The firm was started with his brother-in-law George Webb. The firm prospered and Mappin and Webb run by Newton Mappin were thriving with a large showroom on Norfolk street, displaying silverware and electroplate. By 1897 the company was granted a Royal Warrant. Mappin & Webb was silversmiths both to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 and to HRH the Prince of Wales.

The company's premises at No1 Poultry in London were famously demolished in 1994 by developer Peter Palumbo. It was replaced by a controversial building designed by architect James Stirling. The firm was taken over by Asprey & Co in the 1980s but was sold later. The company is now a brand owned by the jewellers Goldsmiths group.
