1-2 June 1979.  Hughes Stadium, Sacramento.  61st California High School CIF State Boy's and 6th State Girl's Championships.  Program 48 pages.  Three National Records featured the Girl's meet.  Leslie Deniz (Gridley) won the Discus throw with 167-1, Sherri Howard (San Gorgonio) ran the 440 in 53.65.  Four Howard sisters (Artra, Tina, Denean and Sherri) led San Gorgonio to a national record 3:44.1.  Gwen Loud would win 3 titles (100, 220, Long Jump) and anchor Westchester's sprint relay to a 4th triumph and win the team title with 24 points to San Gorgonio's 19.  On the Boy's side David Mack (LA, Locke) won the 880, while Lee Balkin (Glendale) cleared a towering 7-3 1/4.

Pasadena HS won the Boy's title with 16 points mainly through the efforts of Mike Sanford.  Great Meet with the Girls stealing the headlines for the first time.
