~ WW1 Royal Navy Cordite Carrier ~

This is a good example of the type of container that was used on Royal Navy ships to carry cordite charges.

These were constructed of cork covered in canvas or leather. This one has been finished in canvas, painted navy blue, decorated with a royal crest and varnished.

A large and robustly stitched leather carrying strap hangs from two firmly attached brass pins. It does not obscure the crest if hanging in front.

The royal crest (applied by transfer) bears the King’s crown and dates it to around WW1.

This is an interesting piece of military history and is a brilliant decorative or collector’s item for anyone with an interest in gunnery, the navy or artillery. Or, one could re-purpose this item in the home to become a rather smart umbrella stand.

~ Dimensions ~

The carrier is 21 inches (53 cm) tall or 26 inches (66 cm) if hung from the handle.

At its widest point the carrier is 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter.

The carrier weighs 1.83 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The carrier is in a fairly good condition showing less wear and damage than might be expected with an item of this age and use.

The paint and transfer both have been knocked and scuffed over time, but the crest is identifiable (pictured) and the piece on the whole retains its charm.

There is some light damage to the canvas at the top
