The first album produced by Neil Davidge with the group, Mezzanine topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, becoming the band's most commercially successful album to date. Drawing on influences from a variety of genres, including rock, hip-hop, and dub, the band developed a trip-hop sound into an electronica style.
