ORIGINAL 1940 BERNARD JOSEPH STEFFEN (1907-1980) 'S CURVE' SIGNED LITHOGRAPH

This is a wonderful original.  It is one of a few really wonderful original American prints I recently picked up and am offering this week.  A couple, including this one, come from the Collectors of American Art, Inc which according to my research was a group that sold prints via subscription to members.  This is a special WPA era American print.  Bernard Joseph Steffen was a very important Kansas and New York artist who studied printmaking under Thomas Hart Benton.  This print shows what incredible skill he learned from his teacher.  For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below.  This is an outstanding, nearly perfect example of this scarce print.  Image measures 9 3/8 x 8 1/4 inches on complete original sheet measuring 16 x 11 3/4 inches.  Signed in pencil lower right.  Stunning rich impression.  Print is taped verso at top and bottom right corners.  Bottom left corner verso has the original stamp from the collectors and is dated Dec 1940 which is exactly when it came out.  In original paper matte with tissue over for protection for its life.  Really it is like you are getting it fresh from the Collectors group or the artist in 1941.  Do your own research on this print.  About as fine an example as you are going to find of this print.  If you collect important American prints check my store for the others I am offering this week.  FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES.

For those not familiar with the artist his biography from askart reads: "Born Neodesha, Nov. 24, 1907; died Flushing, NY, July 1980. Painter, specialized in rural scenes and landscapes. Printmaker. Studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Students League, the Los Angeles Art Students League, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Lived in Neodesha in 1930 and later in Woodstock, NY. Steffen took a rural sensibility to New York, where he studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League. Was a Works Progress Administration muralist from 1934-1941 where he focused on landscape and eschewed the romance and narrative that marked the Regionalists. Steffen painted the mural, "Neodesha First Inhabitants", for the Neodesha Post Office in 1938.Taught at the school of the National Serigraph Society, an organization founded in 1940 to promote screen printing. His style changed in the late 1950s from realistic to abstract. Author of the 1963 book, Silk Screen."
