Schmidt was a nationally recognized authority on American architectural history who devoted most of his leisure time to locating and documenting regional architecture of New England and Western New York. He amassed an extensive collection of measured drawings, sketches, and photographs that illustrate his numerous architectural writings. Starting with his first book in 1944 Schmidt raised the money to print his books himself and continued to self-publish his works throughout his lifetime. His books were available through mail order or local bookstores in the Rochester, NY area.

When Schmidt became legally blind he began working with Philip Parr of Caledonia, NY. Parr, a history & architecture buff worked with Schmidt on several books and shared authorship with Schmidt on “More About Octagons”.  This Carl Schmidt notebook is from the estate of his friend and co-author Philip Parr of Caledonia, NY.
