The eye part is made thinly. I don't know It will endure impact of hewing. However, I strongly striked that part with a wood hammer and there's no problem. But please note this. Please closely check at that part on the video above.

There crack lines on the verge of en eye, this is because of shrinkage of ground Iron. I don't think  that part will break easily because it seems the inside of the crack still fixes with the blade. Please note that this axe is over 100 years old.
