1562 England, Elizabeth I, Milled Sixpence, Plain Dress, mm Star, Borden & Brown 23 O4/R4, S.2594, N.2025/2

A nice example of this Elizabethan milled coin struck on an overweight flan. Struck from the die pair listed in Borden & Brown, The Milled Coinage Of Elizabeth I, British Numismatic Journal 53 as Type 23, Obverse 4/Reverse 4. Worn but reasonably well detailed. Adjustment marks, striking weakness, and spreading at rim are noted, consistent with an overweight flan. XRF testing shows that the alloy is 93.41% silver and 5.30% copper. Weight 3.61g.

O: ELIZABETH DG ANG FRA ET HIB REGINA. Small bust with plain dress facing left, a rose behind.

R: POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV. Square topped shield over long cross fourchee dividing the legend. Date above.
