Bound by R Carswell & Son. Full red leather binding with gilt college emblem (Collegium Mageense Apud Derry) to the front and rear boards, 5 raised gilt bands separating 6 compartments, 5 of which are decorated in gilt.

John Brown FRSE FRCPE (1810 – 1882) was a Scottish physician and essayist best known for his three-volume collection Horae Subsecivae (Leisure Hours, 1858), which included essays and papers on art, medical history and biography.
Of the first, his dog story "Rab and his Friends" (1859), and his essays "Pet Marjorie" (1863), on Marjorie Fleming, the ten-year-old prodigy and alleged "pet" of Walter Scott, "Our Dogs", "Minchmoor", and "The Enterkine" are best known. Brown was half-brother to the organic chemist Alexander Crum Brown.

Externally
- Spine – good condition – gilt titles on a black label, 5 raised gilt bands separating 6 compartments, 5 of which are decorated in gilt, some wear to the top and tail, there are a couple of nicks out of the leather in the bottom two compartments, worn and faded to the red leather.
- Joints – good condition – rubbed, sound.
- Corners – good condition – bumped and worn.
- Boards – good condition – full red leather with blind tooled borders, there is a gilt college emblem to both front and rear boards, edges are bevelled, wear to the leather around the edges, the top left hand corner of the rear board has a small piece of the leather missing.
- Page edges – good condition – top edge slightly darkened, all marbled.

- Hinges – good condition – intact.
- Paste downs – good condition – marbled, the binders label is pasted in the bottom right hand corner of the front paste down.
- End papers – good condition – marbled, the internal free end papers are lightly tanned with some foxing.
- Title – good condition – red and black text, lightly tanned.
- Pages – good condition – lightly tanned throughout.
- Binding – good condition.
