·       The Occult Review was the pre-eminent occult journal of the twentieth century. It contained essays on all aspects of occultism, from alchemy to witchcraft, but with a particular emphasis on magic: hardly surprising as a number of its authors had been members of the Golden Dawn or its offshoots. Most of the eminent occultists of the period contributed to the journal including Aleister Crowley, AE Waite, Arthur Conan Doyle, Upton Sinclair, Annie Besant, Israel Regardie, Lewis Spence and many others.

  • The seeds of New Age spiritual awareness has its roots in the late 19th and early 20th century. Swami Vivekananda was introducing the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. Suzuki was doing the same with Zen Buddhism. Blavatsky's Theosophical Society had a large following.  Interest in spiritualism, Tarot, divination, astrology and all manner of occult practices was on the rise. Rosicrucianism was gaining renewed interest and new occult societies were emerging such as Crowley's Ordo Templi Orientis and Mathers' Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
  • All of these many threads of the blossoming western esoteric tradition were represented in The Occult Review.  It was the premier spiritual journal of the day and attracted talented writers from the whole spectrum of spiritual philosophies.
