If you are interested in this collection you already know what a great treasure the American Guide Series is. Published during the height of the Great Depression by 1000’s of unemployed artists and writers these guides contain detailed histories of each state. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state's unique flavor.

Little-known authors, many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures, were commissioned to write these important books.  A few of the notable writers were:

Conrad Aiken, Nelson Algren, Nathan Asch, Saul Bellow, John Cheever, Loren Eiseley, Ralph Ellison, Kenneth Rexroth, Studs Terkel, Richard Wright and Frank Yerby.

Author John Steinbeck, who managed to acquire the whole series, wrote that "the complete set comprises the most comprehensive account of the United States ever got together, and nothing since has even approached it." Even now experts still consider the American Guide Series to be the most broadly conceived survey of the cultural geography of the United States ever undertaken.

Many of the books in this collection are now very rare and expensive.  An original set would take up many feet of shelf space, weigh well over 100 pounds and cost $1000’s.  You will get the whole mammoth collection on an easily searchable, compact and light weight DVD.
