A programme
and book of words given to those who attended the Forty-Eighth Anniversary Dinner
of the Licenced Victuallers’ Protection Society of London, at St. James’s
Hall in Piccadilly, London on 28 November 1878. The 28-page 5” by 8” programme has lots of
information about the Society and the details of the concert which included
performances by Jessie Bond of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. Bond
was then playing Hebe in the Gilbert and Sullivan opera “HMS Pinafore”
at the Opera Comique but must have been able to dash across town in time for
her first appearance on stage since dinner was served at 5pm. In fair condition
the programme has a strong crease and the back cover appears to be missing
while the front cover has been Scotch-taped to the title page.
*This item was formerly in the collection of John Cannon, the respected G&S collector and researcher who died in 2021. He left instructions that all collectors should have a chance to acquire the treasures in his collection, which will therefore be auctioned here over the next year or so by StageMemories and PaperJoys. Please let us know if you would like to be added to a mailing list, to be informed of all or specific items from John’s collection.
Shipping: Please take a look at the shipping options offered, which are based
on my estimate of
the selling price. If an item sells for less than expected I may
be able to reduce the shipping cost. Equally, if an item sells for
considerably more than expected then you might wish to boost the
insurance or the depth of packaging, which will increase the shipping cost.
I am always happy to combine items
to reduce the shipping costs for you, but please note that when multiple
items reach a high total value I may ask you to insure the package. If you want
a service not stated, such as first class or surface mail, please ask for a
quote. In
all cases please discuss with me before making your payment. The maximum
possible level of insurance on items sent overseas with Royal Mail is £250.
If the total value of contents exceeds this figure then you will have to
accept the risk of sending the item(s), or choose an alternative courier.
