Item: (1) Rare Vintage, original cabinet PHOTO of a pioneer wagon train headed by Holstein bulls about to leave town. On the reverse is written "Wagoner, Indian Territory." The wagon at left is full of women and children, and the men are on horses. The wagon at right is carrying all their furniture. Grandpa is also leaving along with the family dog.

The buildings and fences are all newly built. At top right is a store with a sign ending in ....OLE COMPANY and another horse and wagon.

There was a deady drought in Kansas in 1859. The drought finally meant that they must receive help or starve. They had been able to fight border ruffians but could not fight starvation. After a year of the drought, they began to give up and go back East. During the fall of 1860, no fewer than 30,000 settlers abandoned their claims and the improvements that had been made at the expense of so much labor and left Kansas. Who knows where this family was heading.

Norcatur is in far west Kansas near the Nebraska border.
