Midland Railway luggage label,  in condition as shown

The Midland Railway was formed in 1844 and had labels on white and, later, also mauve, then purple paper. Destination labels (approx 84mm x 47mm) then appeared coded PF 70, later P.F. 70 R 2, dates appear from 1900 to 1914 and the last label produced was a smaller, oblong undated label (approx 84mm x 32mm) coded P.F. 70 R 2a, with the code alongside the title. Labels showing a route below the destination are slightly larger. Most labels had gummed backs, which can cause curling & sometimes dessication over time

Pre-grouping railway labels from England, Wales & Scotland date from before January 1923, when the GWR became larger and the LMS, LNER & SR were formed from an amalgamation of Companies in their area of operation. In turn these Companies were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to form British Railways.  Stock codes may be shown, sometimes the quantity printed and if a date is shown, eg: 2-98, 1/23, it signifies the month & year of printing or if 16-7-95, the day also, in the 19th or 20th century
