An original Victorian Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal awarded to a Ships Corporal 1st Class who came form Madron near Penzance in Cornwall.

The medal was awarded to 126617 Ships Corporal William Maddern

The medal is correctly named as follows:

WM. MADDERN,  SH.  CORP.  1CL.  H.M.S. DEFIANCE.

William Maddern was born in Madron, Cornwall on 11th August 1868.

He enlisted into the Royal Navy on 19th March 1884 aged 15 as a boy 2nd class.

William served on numerous ships during his service including Ganges, Impregnable, Shannon, Cambridge, Lion, Defiance, Caroline etc.

He was awarded this Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in March 1894 after 10 years service.

William was 'discharged died' at home in Davenport on 23rd October 1903 aged 33 from phthisis - pulmonary tuberculosis. He was serving on HMS Defiance at the time.
