Daredevil has faced many a costumed thug in his day, but one of his most dramatically clad antagonists is the original Gladiator (Real Name: Melvin Potter), who first entered The Man Without Fear's urban gladiatorial arena in Daredevil Vol. 1, #18 (July 1966).
Potter, who is a costumer by trade, initially had a very jealous attitude toward superheroes, feeling that they possessed their powers and abilities -- and therefore their renown -- due to their costumes. Seeking to make a name for himself via his own powered-up uniform, Potter created a stylized armored get-up complete with wrist-mounted buzz saws, razor-edged boots, and an intimidating helmet. Thus armed, Gladiator set out on his villainous path by challenging Daredevil one-on-one (including Foggy Nelson in a Daredevil costume), and then by allying himself with other classic DD foes such as Death-Stalker, The Masked Marauder, and The Purple Man. Over time, however, Potter began to change his ways, and he found himself allied with The Hero of Hell's Kitchen on more than one occasion. Recently, Daredevil's alter ego, blind attorney Matt Murdock (who through his enhanced senses knows that Potter is innocent of murdering two fellow inmates), has represented Gladiator in another type of arena: a court of law.
So, a quick glance around the colosseum shows the crowd giving a hearty "Thumbs up!" to The Gladiator, a former villain who has turned into one of DD's most loyal supporters!
