Cher is a French department in the Centre-Val de Loire region which takes its name from the Cher river. The department was created during the French Revolution on Mars 4, 1790 in application of the law of December 22, 1789, from part of the province of Berry, Bourbonnais, Nivernais (Aubois valley) and the Orleans. The Cher formerly formed with the department of Indre the province of Berry. Today it is part of the Centre-Val de Loire region and borders the departments of Indre, Loir-et-Cher, Loiret, Nièvre, Allier and Creuse. Charente-Maritime is a department located in the South-West of France, geographically falling within the “Midi Atlantic”. To put an end to the Ancien Régime, the department was created during the French Revolution on Mars 4, 1790, in application of the law of December 22, 1789. It was formed artificially from the ancient provinces of Aunis and Saintonge, as well as a small portion of Poitou and Angoumois, with Saintes as its capital. It was originally named Charente-Inférieure due to the geographical position of the river where the Charente flows its waters in its lower course to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean. On September 4, 1941, a law authorized the department of Charente-Inférieure to change its name to that of Charente-Maritime. Main cities: La Rochelle, Saintes, Rochefort, Royan, Aytré, Tonnay-Charente, Saint-Jean-d'Angély, Périgny, Lagord, Saujon, Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, Surgères ...
