Biography of Irene Langhorne Gibson, inspiration for "The Gibson Girl" archetype.  One of the most remarkable women of her day, her independent spirit encouraged a generation of women to throw off their Victorian shackles and assert themselves.  Later in life, she used her many powerful friendships to champion progressive causes, exhorting women to support social reform. Across the country, Irene campaigned with Eleanor Roosevelt. Among other accomplishments she chaired New York's Child Placing and Adoption Committee for twenty years.
