Dickens, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. With Illustrations by Phiz [ H.K. Browne ].  London:  Chapman and Hall, 1839.  Octavo, full black calf, with a red label, blind- stamped and with gold tooling and marbled edges.  The binding is in very nice condition, the text has three leaves which are slightly damaged on the edge, but is reasonably clean.  Lacks one of the 39 illustrations (p. 322), which are all somewhat foxed, as is the portrait, and one has a half inch thumb hole out of the side margin.  The pictures show the range of discoloration.  Overall a nice copy of the first state of the text.

Frontispiece portrait, xvi, 624pp plus 38 illustrations,  textually complete

Details:  Portrait engraved by Finden after Maclise's painting with Chapman and Hall printed at the bottom, apparently the first state.  The first 4 plates are also with the Chapman and Hall imprint at the bottom, p.123 reads "visiter" for "sister", p.160 reads "latter", p.245 reads "flys", p.297 reads "incontestible", p.586 reads "suprise".  I do not have the relevant reference work, so please ask if you want further details on the exact issue, or pictures of specific plates.
